Front Yard Garden Update for Late Summer, 2018

Welcome!!

Well, Labor Day is over and as my Mother would have said, so is the Summer........

We are still predicted to have sweltering heat and humidity here this week but it looks like Fall may be on the way next week with high temps predicted in the 70's and low's in the 50's!!

Now that is my type of weather.....High's in the 60's would be even better....

And hopefully, the rain will stop.......

We got another 4 inches of rain the other day!!!
I love Fall and I do like the Winter and snow but I do hope that the increased precipitation that we have seen in the Summer does not carry over to the Winter because this will be the last Winter that I will be working and driving in snow , as Hospitals do not close because of snow.....
I am not afraid of driving in snow and I know how to drive in snow since I have had to drive in it for the past 40 years but I am afraid of others who do not know how to drive in snow or think that they are invincible and drive like a lunatic in snow!

In this post, I will be sharing how the flowers I planted in the front of our house have fared in this extreme weather that we have had here in NEPA.......

But first, I want to Thank Marilyn, over at Marilyn's Treats, for choosing my post, "Sweet" Summer Tree in the Craft Room, as one of her feature's from last week's Over The Moon Party!
 Thanks so much, Marilyn!!

Please stop by and link up to this wonderful party!!

Amazing, my flowers in the front of the house have done pretty well this Summer......

This is what the front of our house looks like now.......
Here is what it looked like when I first planted my annuals for this Summer.......
From the other side........

Before........
Now........
I went with a red, orange and yellow color theme as far as flowers were concerned to make it an easier transition into Fall.......

I am glad that I did that!!

This is how the porch and yard look as you walk out our front door.......
Before......
Now......
I planted 2 yellow Marigolds, a Spike and 2 red Begonias in this urn.........
And this is how it looks now at the end of the Summer......
I wish the Begonias had grown a bit larger.......
I don't know if they were choked out by the Marigolds or not......
The spike did well and I know that because of the deep roots they form, it is going to be a bugger to pull out.......
I planted 2 Begonias in this pot......
Look at it now!!
Inside the porch now......
In the beginning of the Summer.......
One orange Marigold planted in each of these small pots......
They did okay but the orange Marigolds did not grow as large as the yellow ones did.......
I may go with yellow Marigolds or red Begonias next year.......
 One red Begonia.......
 Definitely thrived.......
 Looking out from the porch.......
The pots in front of the porch.....
 When first planted......
2 yellow and 2 orange Marigolds........
Again the yellow Marigolds over took the orange ones.......
Next year, I will go with planting either 4 orange or 4 yellow Marigolds in these posts.....
The other pot on the other side.......
You can see that the end of the season may be coming for these as the leaves are turning white in places......
Soon, I will be replacing them with Mums for Fall......
The other urn at the opposite end of the porch......
Planted again with a spike, 2 yellow Marigolds and 2 red Begonias......
Again, the Begonias seemed to have gotten choked out by the marigolds.....
Now I did rotate each urn around and even switched the urns from one side to the other side of the porch........
I planted one Begonia in this small pot......
 It did quite well......
It was so small that I thought it would die!!
4 Begonias were planted in this long planter on the side of the porch and flower bed........
 Look at it now........
I learned a few years ago not to overcrowd these planters.......
This is how it looks from inside the porch.....
Even though we had so much heat and humidity, we also had a lot of rain so I think that is why it went from this........
To this........
And I did water when the pots would start to dry out between rain storms ........

The front flower bed under our Living Room window looked like this at the start of the Season.......
And this is what it looks like now......
Marigolds in these 2 pots did okay......
We really need to cut these bushes back before Winter......
I don't care for them being so big!!!
This are how the 2  large urns on the wall between our townhouse and my neighbor's looked when first planted.......
Each urn was planted with 2 New Guinea Impatiens.......
And now!!!
At first, I thought that I should have gone with 3 plants in each urn.......
But I think the 2 plants did just fine!!!
The flowers in the urn in the front have gotten larger that the one's in the back urn but they do get more sun..........
The back urn is sort of sheltered by my neighbor's overhang.......
I think 3 New Guinea Impatiens would have been too crowded......
I will definitely go with these again next year for these urns!!!
In between the urns is the other long planter like on the other side of the flower bed by the porch........
Begonias always thrive in the front because of the amount of shade it gets........

Again, there are only 4 plants planted in here.....
As long as the New Guinea Impatiens are doing well, I will keep them in these urns for awhile before planting Mums......
Looking back ........
The small long front flower bed that runs the length of our row of 10 townhouses at the top of the slope in front of our houses......
We did trim in front of our house after the Azaleas and Rhododendron finished blooming.....

But it looks like we are going to have to cut them back again before the Winter!!!

An Azalea.......
The Rhododendron........
Look at all the new sprouts on it.......

Another Azalea.....
My Park Bench........
2 pots on the bench............
1 New Guinea Impatien planted in this pot......
Will definitely plant this again new year.......
And 2 yellow Marigolds did okay in this pot......
The Forsythia and Azalea will need a trim too!!!!
I hope you enjoyed seeing how the flowers that I planted in the front of our house did this Summer......
Slowly, I will be changing them over to Mums as they loose their luster........
I am hoping to do something a bit different with them black urns on each side of the porch for Fall.....

I am glad that I went with the red, orange and yellow color theme because I can transition the look of the front of our house into Fall .......

I hope to be sharing Fall decorations with you soon!!!

So I hope you will be back to visit again soon.......

And thanks to those who took the time out of their busy day to spend a little bit of time with me!!

  2. Your flowers look beautiful, Debbie! My flowers didn't do so well this summer. It was either too hot or too rainy. My new guinea impatiens that I planted in urns on my front got too much rain and went limp and couldn't recover from the wet soil, so I replaced them with new soil and petunias I transplanted from my backyard. And I had more new guinea impatiens from the same lot that I had in the urns, planted as borders in the front. They look pretty good as long as I keep them watered daily. I know, that sounds crazy! And then I planted vinca everywhere in pots and in the garden thinking they would bloom fully and spread but they've been struggling too. Some look great - others, not so much. Even my hydrangeas are looking sick with spots on the leaves and the flowers turning brown. This spring and summer has had me going a bit batty trying to keep up with my flowers. So glad yours are thriving and look so pretty!

  3. Your thumbs are red and yellow instead of green...lol! Your marigolds and begonia are outstanding! My grandma used to keep a few pots of angel wing begonia's in her kitchen window year round.....loved them! Have a great rest of the week my friend!

  5. Your plants have done so well! Isn’t it fun to look back at how they started so small and now are filled out so beautifully! So glad you shared your post with our Garden Party!

  6. I love all the Marigolds, they look wonderful, because it is so hot here, they only survive the spring and then stop blooming. Happy Fall!! Hope you will stop by and share on #omhgww this week!

  7. Your front yard looks very nice, considering the horrid temps we have had and also rain here. Some plants love it, others don't. I've seen beautiful begonias here, but usually in partial shade...that might be why yours are small. My geraniums barely bloomed, they like it cooler. Looks great though, you definitely have a green thumb!

  16. Debbie, your planters looks absolutely gorgeous! It's so nice to still have color in this heat. I think I have a tendency to over fill my pots. The green plants have taken over. I'm going to think differently next year. Thanks for sharing with SYC.

  23. Debbie, you certainly have a green thumb. I've never managed to master container gardening. Even if I just have one container to tend, I can pretty much kill everything in it within about a month!
