One Project Checked Off My To Do List

 Welcome to Debbie-Dabble Blog!!

I am so happy you decided to stop by!!

Today I will be sharing a not so pretty area of our home but a much needed and utilized area......

And one I am pretty sure in the 10 years that I have been Blogging, you have NEVER seen before......

But first, I want to Thank, Bev, over at the Eclectic Red Barn, for choosing my post, Late Summer Back Yard Cottage Garden Update,  as one of her features from last week's Thursday Favorite Things Linky Party!!!

Thanks so much, Bev!!!

Please stop by and link up your posts to this charming party!!!

Not much new here except thankfully, my refrigerator is still running.....

I hope that remains so until my new one can be delivered on Sunday.....

Joe came home with this beauty from the Amish Farmer who sets up stands at the convenience store right down the road from us.......

It was only $20!!!!

I am picturing it on a table with one or 2 trees on it.......

Time will tell.....

After I deep cleaned our bedroom......

I also went through all our paint cans, cleaning out old paint and stain in our storage room.......

Click HERE if you missed that post.....

Then the "Might as Well's" took over......

I decided that I "Might as Well" clean out the WHOLE Storage Room and reorganize and rearrange it....

This actually was one of the projects I have on my 2-3 year list of things To Do in my Retirement!!

Why do I call it a 2-3 Year To Do List you ask???

Because that is how long it will take me to do everything on that list......

After all, I have been retired for over a year and barely made a dent in it.....

Now what could I possibly have on that list you ask???

All the projects that I have wanted to do in the house but never had the time to do when I was working....

There is a lot of paint projects which I thought I would be able to do this Summer but forget that with the heat and especially the horrific humidity we had here.....

Paint does not dry well when it is humid!!!!

Now you have heard me mention that behind this mirrored door in the Den is half of our original Storage Room......

We took half of the Storage Room to add more square footage to our Den when I had my Dad turn the enclosed back porch into the Den, adding another room to our townhouse........

This area, where I like to sit and watch TV in the evening when Joe goes upstairs to bed, was the other half of the Storage Room......

My Father took the door that was the original door to the Storage Room and moved it over here when he built this wall......

I mentioned that I am pretty sure that I have never shared our Storage Room on this Blog or even shared it with company to our home because usually when you open this door, something would fall out and hit you....

Now several years ago, I did give it a good cleaning and had it organized to my liking and in one month, Joe had it a mess.....

He does have a habit of just putting things where they will fit.....

Or so he thinks.....

I spent 2 days in this room getting it to look as it does now and he has strict orders to keep it that way.....

Plus you will see I have everything labeled as to what is in what and where it goes like I do in my Craft Room......

Are you ready for the reveal???????

I said it would not be pretty.....

But it is now functional and organized.....

We do not have a basement or a garage so many things that would normally go in those places have to be stored in here......

Many years ago, I came up with the idea of hanging Bicycle Hooks on the door to hold step stools, ladders, etc....

First thing that gets hung up on them is a nice folding ladder that helps me to reach the ceilings.....

Then I added the folding chair that I use in the Dining Room when the kids or company comes over....

And a small step stool......

You can see that this is a small space but believe me, it holds a lot.....

After my Dad turned the back porch into another room for us, he used up old lumber and a few pieces of formica used for countertops that he had laying around and made not only the shelving for this Storage Room but the bracket that hold the shelves.....

Above the doorway is a shelf that holds most of the paint......

You can see half of the shelf above the door......

On the top shelf on the right side of the room are the rest of the paints and stains.....

On the second shelf......

This side of the room is where Tools and anything having to do with Carpentry along with a few Garden things are stored.....

On the 3rd shelf.....

More of the same.....

You can see we certainly have a few screwdrivers....

Under neath the shelves.....

Pieces of wood, spackling tools, gloves for projects and gardening, out door cords and Joe's shoes he wears when working outside.....

A few drawer units......

On a shelving unit......

Tools and my tool carrier on the bottom shelf....

I bought myself this tool carrier several years ago....

No, not a Girlie looking one for this Carpenter's daughter!!!

I cleaned it out and reorganized it.....

All the things I like to use are inside of it and readily available.....

And I fits perfectly here....

We had more than enough tools .....

So much so that I made up another tool box, with some of my Dad's tools, to keep upstairs so I would not have to run downstairs to get what I need when working on a project.....

Looking at the back of the room........

The 2 shelves above the peg board.....

Anything electrical is stored here....

And Joe's car care things here....

On the Peg Board....

Saws, large Zip Ties, Masks and Safety Glasses, Dust Pans and Broom, etc....

My downstairs sweepers are stored to the right of a garbage can used for recycling cans......

Behind the can is a folding stool I sometimes use when cleaning to save my legs from standing too long....

Over on the left side of the room.....

On the top shelf......

These are on the other side of the shelf above the door......

All Painting related supplies and all my Spray Paint are stored here in this area.....

Spray paint and over on the other shelf, a tub filled with all my outdoor flags and mini flags and mail box covers.....

More drawers filled with all kinds of things on this shelf....

On this shelf is all things having to do with lighting.....

That is the original carpeting that was in our Den when we first made it into another room.....

Under the shelving on this side , the air conditioners from the Den and the Living Room are stored 8 months out of the year on dollies so they can be rolled right out and over to the windows and Joe will not break his back carrying them.....

And in this corner, spare rugs that I use when it snows and extra towels if needed to mop up a leaking pipe or any other plumbing disasters.....

I said it wouldn't be pretty but this room holds a lot and now that it is organized and everything is labeled, hopefully we can keep it like this.........

Now that it is organized, I want to eventually put new contact paper on all the shelves but that can be done in the Winter.....

I wanted everything to be easily accessible and readily visible so we would not have to be searching for things....

Everything can be reached on the top shelves with the use of this black step stool.....

I have also learned that it is easier to find something when it is stored in clear containers that you can see what is inside.......

A lot of the wire baskets, small wire shelves and clear containers came from my neighbor Elly's house as she was definitely the Queen of Organizing......

When I organized my Craft Room several years ago, I also learned from my neighbor Elly that labeling everything also helped immensely!!!

Now we will not be afraid to open this door when we have company.......

I am thrilled that I was able to get this big project done and check it off my 2-3 Year To Do List!!!

And I hope I gave you a few ideas about storage in a small area.....

Enjoy the Labor Day Weekend!!!

And I hope you will stop by to visit again soon!!

  1. What a nice storage area!!! And you fixed it up so nicely! Your comment on giving Joe strict orders to keep it that way made me laugh! You know, my hubby is like that...just puts things where ever ...he has to be given "suggestions" on where things go...he gets so sad when I begin reorganizing anything in the house....lol!

    1. Nina,
LOL!! As I mentioned in the post, I had organized the storage room before and within a month, I could not find a thing...Maybe this time I was a bit smarter because I explained to Joe where I was putting everything and why I was putting things where they are so maybe he would better understand my thinking!!! He actually thinks it looks good so we will see how far that goes!! Thanks so much for stopping by!! I hope you had a great Labor Day weekend!!
      Hugs,
      Debbie

  2. How happy and satisfied you must be to have this project checked off the list and thank you so much for sharing your storage area and how it is organized. I did get a lot of ideas and I need all the tips I can get in respect to organizing. A few years ago you posted how you organized your holiday totes and I worked hard to get mine organized like you did. It has made getting holiday items out a lot easier especially at Christmas time. Thank you again . Have an awesome weekend.
    Hugs,
    Melisa

  3. Your sense of achievement shines through your writing. It is always a delight to have a large job ticked of the list and you have done a great job with the storage and organisation. Long may it last...

  4. Storage is essential and such a pain. Well done!

  5. I am envious of how nice and neat your storage room is. Carl is "in charge" of the tool room in or basement, but I am thinking that I might have to take over and get it organized, because I just can't find anything when I need it!

  6. I'm pretty sure that is the hardest working storage room around! It is so organized and the space is well used! I need to get my storage looking like that!

  7. you've been busy getting organized which always makes life better - love that Amish sled - wow I'm so envious! Not that I need a sled in Florida - the image is too ridiculous for words!

  8. I wish I could be so organized. Your storage area looks well thought out and you can find anything because everything has a place. You have inspired me to get to work in our very unorganized garage!

  9. Doesn't it fell so great to get a messy area organized?! I too tend to label everything when I finally get a space organized in the hopes that the rest of the family will keep it that way.

  10. You sure are one organized lady, Debbie! Thank you for sharing at Party In Your PJ's.

  11. Debbie, I have recently taken the plunge into sorting my craft room as well and I must tell you, yours looks alot nicer and more organized than mine. Although most of my things are labelled, going thru 30 bins to find the right one is so frustrating. You did a fantastic job with organizing the room.
Thank you for sharing at Meraki Link Party. We hope to see you again.

  12. Good for you Debbie! That was quite the project you tackled! Thanks so much for sharing with us at Farm Fresh Tuesdays Blog Hop. Your project is one of my features this week! Be sure to stop by to see your feature and say hi (like you always do)!
    Take care my friend,

  13. Wow. You got your storage area organized nicely! I thought I had my pantry organized well, but then suddenly mice crept in. I'm cleaning everything up and putting all bagged pantry items into hard sealed containers (most were already, but...) I have zap traps here now, too. Next thing I need to do is organize the workspaces in the basement and the garage. You are inspirational!

  14. It is so hard to even get started on a project like this - even harder when you are in the middle of it to stay motivated - but the end result is very satisfying. You will be happy you got this one off the list. #HomeMattersParty

  15. This is amazing. You are an organization whiz. Can you come help us? Come by to see it featured at Keep In Touch. :)

  16. We've lived without a garage and a basement, and it is hard. You have this packed, but labeling makes all the difference. Now we have a huge garage and hubby almost has it labeled. I still need a guide to let me know where everything is though, his logic and mine are world's apart. KUDOS on a fabulous job, Debbie! Hugs, Sandi
