Front Yard Garden Notes for Next Year: Learning from My Mistakes!!

I thought I would show you how the flowers that I planted in the front of our house fared out this Summer even with record breaking heat and humidity!!!

And I also want to share some of the mistakes that I made and how I plan to learn from them when I buy plants next year......

I want to keep the red and yellow theme next year because I do like how it looked........

Here are the Before, Afters, Mistakes and hopefully, Solutions!!

Before........
After.....
Mistake:

The Geraniums got lost!!

Note to Self for next year:

Plant a red begonia in the center with only 2 yellow marigolds instead of 4 and NO dusty millers

Before......
After......
Note to Self for next year......

Begonias did very well so go with more begonias planted in the front since they do so well in shade

Before.......
After.....
Before.....
 Mid Season......
 After......
  Mistake:

Too many Marigolds that totally crowded out the Geranium.........

Note to self for next year:

Forget the geranium in the center of the pot and plant one red begonia in the center with only 2 marigolds and a spike

Before.....
After.....
Note to Self for next year:

Forget the Dusty Millers and plant 6 begonias instead......

Before......
After......
Note to Self for next year........

Did well even in sweltering heat but keep watering daily......

This is only one begonia!!!
Before.......
Mid Season.......
 After........
Mistake.......

Dusty Millers took over the urns!!!

Note to Self for next year........

Plant urns with 3 begonias only( I think these urns will look amazing with only begonias planted in them since the begonias have done so well!!

Don't buy the large yellow marigolds as they did not do as well as the smaller ones did

Before........
After........
Note to Self for next year.......

Plant this planter with 6 red begonias

Before......
After........
Notes to Self for next year.....

Plant the larger pot with only yellow marigolds

Before......
After.......
Note to Self for next year......

Plant with red begonias......

So I hope to learn from my mistakes and possibly save a little money next year by buying more flats of just a few different flowers and not buying single geraniums which did not do so well in the front of the house.

And hopefully, it will not be so darn HOT next Summer!!

I also want to share 2 more things.....

This is my neighbor's yard........
Look at those Black Eyed Susans!!!

And Joe took this photo of a hawk sitting on our street light the other morning!!
You can see how big it is because it is almost as big as the light!!

In my next post, I will continue my Series on Planning for Early Retirement with a post on What Every Woman Should Know About Social Security!!

So I hope you will be back to visit soon!!

And thanks to those who took the time out of their busy day to spend a little bit of time with me!!

  5. I love your before and after school and lessons learned! Begonias are some of my favorites but I forgot about them this year. Next year I'll pant some! Thanks for sharing your successes and not so successes. :)

  6. Great post. You kinda read my mind. I did one a little similar but was planning on writing a post about me success and failures. I didn't get a marigold to grow. Now I ask. Who can't grow a marigold. Jeepers! My begonias did well but yours are much prettier. Your weather is not near as hot as ours. Your Blessed.
Thanks for sharing your beautiful gardens!

  7. Your container garden is just gorgeous....you have a really green thumb! I enjoyed your before and after photo's. I usually take before's but I'm really bad about not getting after photo's hugs...

  8. Like you I like to write notes for each summer to let me know what worked and what didn't. The Begonias do very well i shade and their flowers are so pretty. I love using containers in my garden because as a spot loses color I can move it there. Keep your garden up with your green thumb...and I sure hope its NOT so hot next summer.

  9. Wow! Your flowers did amazingly well this summer! I could take some pointers from you as I tend to have a brown thumb {{smiles}}

May your September be sweetly blessed, my friend. Hugs!

  11. I love to make gardening notes! Note to myself after seeing your pictures. Plant begonias!! Honestly, when I'm at the nursery I never think they are pretty but in pots and in yards they are beautiful!

  13. I enjoyed looking at the progress of your plants over the season - great notes and observations that can help anyone who is planting containers... we have only lived here 2 years, so I am still learning what grows best in the front and the back. Found you today at #impartinggrace

  15. Debbie, all in all; I think your planters look lovely! It's good to learn from our mistakes. I planted a whiskey barrel, but for some reason I put two instead of one dusty miller they were on each side of the front and totally filled in. Hiding all of the geraniums and marigolds that were blooming behind them. Thanks for sharing with SYC.
    hugs,

  16. Yours look really great compared to some of mine, I had some flowers that just over powered and I don't think I watered them enough or something, good idea to keep a journal of what to do different next year, I always forget from year to year!

  17. Good lessons, plants do need room to grow. I like mixed pots too. My begonias (all white) went nuts this year, I have them in mostly shade. My geraniums did well too, but needed more water than usual due to the higher heat. Now that it is cooling off, my johnny-jump-ups are blooming again. Torenias are still going, visited by the hummingbirds daily.

  18. Your tubs and containers are just amazing. What a good idea to take photos and make notes for next year.
We went on holiday for 2 weeks in a hot spell and my daughter who was still at home forgot to water anything so everything but our geraniums really suffered. I'm thinking more geraniums for us next year just in case!
Your planting is such an inspiration to do more next year, thanks

  19. Debbie, you are so smart to take notes for the upcoming year--something I always mean to do and never quite get around to! Your begonias are the prettiest I've seen! Thank you for sharing @Vintage Charm!

  21. Your garden is beautiful Debbie. I love begonias but it's hard to have them last in my full sun Florida yard.

  22. I had only begonias and petunias this year. The begonias are still gorgeous but we got the petunias too late. They were lovely while they lasted. Your yard is so filled with colour and you're wise taking notes about what to do next year. When we bought our house we made some major faux pas planting the shrubbery and flowering plants. Didn't have a clue what we were doing and have learned the hard way what to plant where and spacing too. Thanks for sharing, Debbie.

    Blessings,
    Sandi

  23. What a wonderful idea. Both the taking before and after pics and the noting what worked and what didn't. I had noticed that I needed a few more plants here and there in my own garden, but your method makes it so clear. Going to implement this idea today!

  25. Beautiful job and I love all the pictures you took to document the growth! I am a huge container garden enthusiast, so I definitely know how much work & care goes into it. I really enjoy the bright color combinations you picked :) Thank you so much for sharing with us this week at Dishing It & Digging It!

  26. Since Dusty Miller does so well you might consider growing some anyway - they dry wonderfully and make gorgeous wreaths and look so nice in arrangements. Your flowers did amazing this year! Bedding plants are crazy expensive here. 32.00 a flat.
