We are going to become GRANDPARENTS!!!
In about 4-5 months!!
After a long, sometimes heart breaking, arduous journey filled with a
few disappointments, we are very happy to announce that our son Jim and
his wife Danielle are expecting....
TWINS!!!
GIRLS!!!
As thrilling and exciting as it is, it is also worrisome....
So I would greatly appreciate your prayers for a safe birth of these 2 babies and that Danielle does well with it....

I usually decorate the top of the TV Entertainment Center very differently at this time of year....
For Late Summer, for several years, I did a Summer Park theme set in Victorian times...
I changed this display up a bit and moved it into the Dining Room on the buffet this year....
Because I did do a different display on the top of the TV Entertainment Center and around it
Staying with a Coastal/Nautical inspiration, I decided to create a scene from the late 1800's to early 1900's on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City!!!!
After vacationing down at the Jersey Shore every year from when I was 4 years old until my late 30's, my thoughts immediately went to the New Jersey Shore's famous Boardwalks....
One of the first ones built was in Atlantic City!!
From an article on the History of the Boardwalk in Atlantic City as per the Library of Congress Archives....
Did you know that on June 26, 1870, the first section of the Atlantic City Boardwalk opened along the New Jersey beach???
The rest is History.....
One of the main attractions on the Atlantic City Boardwalk was the World Famous Steel Pier!!

It quickly became the greatest Mecca for Entertainment that lasted for over 7 decades!!!
They knew though that it was not large enough so they moved The Beatles Show to Convention Hall in 1964!!!

It
was a phenomenal new venue for entertainment, with thrills and
excitement of all kinds. On Day 1, in 1898, sharpshooter and cowgirl
Annie Oakley was billed as the star entertainment attraction.

A fire destroyed a major portion of the Steel Pier in
1969.
The park declined in popularity and closed in 1976.
A second fire,
erupting in 1982, destroyed it completely.
Through a joint venture, the Catanoso brothers, with Taft Johnson and
Edward Olwell, reopened the park with fourteen rides and shows.
Today,
with 22 rides, games, thrilling shows, a treasured nostalgic past, plus
plans for future growth, Steel Pier continues to offer plenty the entire
family is sure to enjoy.
Currently the Pier offers the number one rate
attraction in town, a Scenic Helicopter Ride over the casinos, beach and boardwalk.....
I found that I had a book, highlighting the 100th Anniversary of the Steel Pier which I bought at a flea market...
I took 2 pages from that book, backed them in cardboard and used them in my display.....
Just picture the elite of Victorian Society, strolling along the Boardwalk in Atlantic City in and around the early 1900's....

Another piece of Atlantic City/Jersey Shore History from that time frame is Lucy!!!!
Lucy the Elephant is one of three such structures designed by James V. Lafferty in 1881 as part of the Elephant Bazaar...
1887
Lafferty sells Elephant Bazaar to Anton Gertzen
1902
Sophia Gertzen renames Elephant Bazaar, Lucy the Elephant & turns it into a tavern
1903
Lucy becomes summer residence to a British doctor and his family
1970
The Gertzens donate Lucy to the newly formed Save Lucy Committee, Inc. & Lucy is moved to her new home and restoration begins
1974
Lucy re-opens to the public after 12 years
1976
Lucy is designated as a National Historic Landmark
2000
Restoration is completed

She is located next to Atlantic City in Margate, NJ....
She is truly magnificent!!!!

And of course, benches line the Boardwalk for people to have a seat and watch the sights....

In Victorian times, they definitely did "promenade" on the Boardwalk....

One of the big attractions during that Era were Carousels!!!
The Atlantic City Carousel was built by Italian manufacturer Bertazzon and is still currently located at Steel Pier in Atlantic City, New Jersey....
I remember riding on that Carousel when I was a child and we took a day trip to Atlantic City from WildWood, NJ., which is where we used to vacation for a week every Summer...
I bought this Carousel in Sam's Club many years ago after Christmas....

The Carousel Horse figurine is Home Interiors.....

The Rolling Chair, introduced in 1884, was the only vehicle allowed on the Boardwalk, which was soon extended by enormous amusement piers such as Steel Pier..

I hope you enjoyed not only our "Promenade" down the Boardwalk in Atlantic City but also learned a bit about the history of this sea side resort....
All the Victorian figurines are Home Interiors....
As the years went by and the casinos in Atlantic City opened up, we found it actually cheaper to take vacations in Atlantic City than in Wildwood....
Joe played at Caesar's and worked with a Slot Boss who was able to assure us free rooms, free meals and free shows....
Even if Joe lost the money that I allowed him to gamble, it still did not cost us as much as Wildwood would have cost us to stay and eat there...
He worked his way up that we were staying in suites, costing $1200 to $1600 a night, for 4-5 day Stays with Dinner for Free!!!
For 5!!!
Here are some pictures of the suites we stayed in with the boys and my Mother...
We loved this one!!
The boys slept on those sofa's and they brought a cot in for my Mother.....
The large jacuzzi tub in the most amazing bathroom!!!
The boys loved the pool on the roof and a miniature golf course too!!
All this ended when Joe was hired as a Letter Carrier for the US Post Office and was not able to refuse overtime, working 6 days a week, for the first 6 years because of the hiring freeze that had just ended before he was hired..
Not only were they extremely short staffed but he was low man on the totem pole for vacations so he was left to take his vacations at the end of September, beginning of October when the boys were back in school....
He lost all his comp points and we have not been back to Atlantic City since then as my health issues started and ended my days of doing any traveling....
BUT, we have wonderful memories and I thoroughly enjoyed putting together this little display of a time gone by on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City.....

Oh my Oh my Oh my! I am so excited for you that I am jumping out of my skin!!!!!! Congratulations to all of you!!!! My first grandchild was a miracle baby whose parents spend so much money and found doctors who were willing and able to help. Then two years later they had one more chance, and we had our twins! I was laid off my job a week before mama went on bedrest and I was able to take care of her and brother until their early arrival. Praying you have the same joy we did!
ReplyDeleteI can give you some advice, if you want. I'll try to share things as I remember. The twinkies somehow have turned 13! My first piece of advice is "umbrella stroller". Even tiny babies are heavy. I used an umbrella stroller indoors for all my grandbabies. Easy to move from room to room, works on carpet or flooring. Saves your back. I would put them in the kitchen with me to cook or wash dishes, we would travel to the bedroom for laundry folding, they would wait in the hall while I was in the ladies room. Easy transport that saved my back! My second piece of advice is about baby gates. Thank goodness someone invented ones that open like a door. We went ahead and screwed the brackets into our doorways and the gate opens and closes like a door. When my kids were little we either had to hop the gates (I would pay a million dollars to see me do that now) or unfold them and have to reinstall every time we went through a doorway. We bought a sturdy metal one that was worth every penny. I am JUST SO HAPPY FOR ALL OF YOU!!!
Aah! Congratulations Deb! I know ya'll are so excited and I wish the family the best . It was a delight to take a stroll to Atlantic City. You created such a beautiful vignette and I enjoyed reading about your family vacations. The rooms were amazing. What fabulous memories.

Congratulations to everyone! Twins!! That is so exciting! I will definitely pray that all goes well. I just read a book set near the Atlantic City boardwalk and it was fun seeing a few of the sights mentioned in the book brought to life through your blog.
