Labor Day Front Porch and Early Fall Garden Update

 Welcome to Debbie-Dabble Blog!!

I am so happy you decided to stop by!!

Just a reminder, I will be posting on Wednesdays and Sundays every week so be sure to check back on those days to see a new post......

As always, click on each picture if you would like to enlarge it....

Happy September!!!

September could not come fast enough for me!!

This has been our 4th Hottest Summer EVER!!!

It has been quite miserable for me as it kept me confined in the house in the air conditioning for almost all of July and August....

We walk our grand pups every morning, 5 days a week, when our son Jim and DIL Danielle are at work and that has been a chore for me as each day, I come home soaking wet in sweat because of the humidity....

It truly has been the Summer from Hell for me as I seem to mind the heat and humidity more and more the older I get....

So , as far as I am concerned.....

Fall started on September 1st because I am going with the start day of Meteorological Fall!!!

Fall is my favorite Season of the year, followed by Winter, then Spring and last is Summer.....

I am itching to decorate for Fall but I will wait until after Labor Day so I will be starting on Tuesday!!

LOL!!

I also want to wish everyone a Happy Labor Day Weekend!!!

And to all those who have to work, not only this Holiday and weekend, but weekends and Holidays through out the year!!!!

In my last post, I shared a Dollar Tree Haul and how I am gearing up for Fall and Halloween with some Fall and Halloween Crafting!!!

And now for a few Personal Notes...

 Food of the Week

Joe brought home an extra Shrimp Scampi from the WB Scranton Pens Reheat and Eat Dinners yesterday...

I made Joe and Joey a Chicken Rice dish for dinner and I had this!!

  It was very good!!

Joe bought tomatoes, an onion and a dozen ears of this delicious sweet corn from the Amish Farmer that sets up every Friday at the Convenience store down the road from us....

The tomatoes and onions will be to top off the burgers and hot dogs i will be making for our Labor Day celebration for our family of 5 that I will be hosting today....

Jim and Danielle are off on Monday so it is better for them to come on Sunday to celebrate the holiday as they will not have to go to work for 3am on Monday morning...

And we have been lucky to have gotten this delicious sweet corn every week since July 4th while many of our local farmers are just getting their corn in and some of the local crops were not good because of all the heat and no rain this Summer...

Joe also picked up some banana bread from the farmer's own bakery....

$3.50 each or 3 for $9.......

Saves me from turning that hot oven on to bake my own as I will freeze these for the upcoming Holiday Season.....

Our son Joey treated us to dinner tonight from Malacari's Take Out Window not far from our house...

It is the site of their former deli store ( which Joe shops a lot at) before they moved to a larger one right down the road from us....

 3 cheese pizza.....

And one with pepperoni on it...

Joe and Joey mostly ate the pepperoni one and really liked it!!

We also ordered a dozen potato pancakes for only $10.99....

I had 2 slices of the 3 cheese pizza and potato pancakes...

All was very good and we will definitely be going back....

We had 3 slices of pizza left over and gave it to my neighbor Ed to try...

After some much needed rain the other day, a Cold Front moved in and dropped our dew points from tropical back down to comfortable and our temperatures to high's in the 70's....

Thursday and Friday were absolutely beautiful days so I took advantage of it and worked out in the front and back yard....

On Thursday, while I cleaned the front porch by taking everything off of it, wiping everything down, sweeping the rugs, put everything back and decorated it for Labor Day, Joe weeded our slope and the both neighbor's on each side of it....

Not bad for a 68 year old guy!!!

After he was finished, he took a rest on the porch!!

Yes, he photo bombed my pictures!

He is trying to do something on his flip phone!!!

LOL!

You can see by that nasty look on his face that he is not having any success as usual!!

Joe is so not computer or technologically savvy.....

LOL!!!

I added 2 of the new Patriotic things that Joe bought on Clearance at Big Lot's, for 75% off plus a $5 off $15 coupon, to my Patriotic Decor for Labor Day on the Front Porch!

Here is what the Front Porch looks like all decked out for the Labor Day weekend without Joe sitting on it!!!

Even though I decorate the porch in Patriotic decor for Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day, I try to change it up a bit for each Holiday and also the flowers are in different stages of growth!

This is how it looked for Memorial Day....

I decorated with Flags from each branch of the Armed Services....

Click HERE to see that post if you missed it....

For July 4th which is more of a Celebration than an Observance and Remembrance....

And now for Labor Day.....

I cut back all the marigolds awhile ago because they were growing a bit too tall for my liking....

I am not sure if the heat caused it or if these are just a different kind of marigold than what I usually get but they are not a full as I would like them....

On the side of the door....

The new Patriotic Door Mat....

I changed up the things that I hang on the front of the house...

You can see I hung up my new Patriotic Welcome to Our Porch Sign

And since Hockey Season will be starting soon, I had to leave Joe's Penguin's plaque up.....

All the other signs, except for the Stars, Joe bought on Clearance over the years for 90% off at Big Lot's.....

A Patriotic basket that I made several years ago....

In the corner of the porch......

I hung a Patriotic bow and a Dollar Tree sign on the Tree and a metal wreath on the post....

I decided not to hang the Patriotic banner on the railing because of the height of those darn marigolds.....

I tucked 2 American flags in the pots and the Dollar Tree Star stakes in the middle urn....

I will decide next week if I will keep the marigolds like I have other years or change them out for mums for the Fall....

The flower bed under the Living Room window....

Again, I tucked 2 flags into the pots.....

I do like how the impatiens did here this year....

These coleus have just exploded.......

The front flower bed.....

I changed out the mini flags for Patriotic ones......

Another flag and Patriotic bow....

At Dusk when my lights come on by Timer.....

Next week, I will decorate the front for Fall with a touch of Halloween.....

On Friday, I attacked the back yard and the Patio.....

I cleaned and swept the Patio , trimmed, dead headed and pulled out some flowers, mostly petunias that have seen their last day, and transplanted some marigolds in their place......

Even with the heat, humidity and lack of rain we have had all Summer, I am happy with how the flowers in the back yard have done!!!

I am going to let the pictures do the most of the talking......

These are deep purple asters which should start to bloom soon....

I pulled out some petunias here and transplanted a few more marigolds.......

A pot on the side of the arbor.......

I threw a bunch of seeds from a wild flower mix in this galvanized planter.....

I see one had a bloom on it!!

I planted marigold seeds that I picked off the marigolds in the front.....

I trimmed and pulled out some of the wave petunias that were looking a bit worse for wear in the watering can and added a few marigolds....

These are asters which will start to bloom soon in a light purple color.....

The Sun hitting the petunias planted in this pot in the chair by the back door.........

I dead headed the wave petunias planted in this hanging basket.....

I took this picture in the early morning with the Sun just swinging around from the front, where it rises, to the back yard....

And a visitor to the Garden.....

There are usually 2 of them who like to frolick in my Cottage garden and I call them Chip and Dip!!!

I hope you all get to spend this labor Day weekend with those that you love like we will be doing and I hope you enjoyed seeing my Patriotic Front Porch decorations for Labor Day and my Early Fall Garden Update!!

  3. Gosh, I wish someone would bring me a surprise scampi dinner!!!! Looks so good.
I skipped Labor Day, although I am very jealous of your "Welcome to the Porch" sign since mine never got hung. I am going straight to fall and debating how soon I can start using the stash of items I have been compiling in my dining room. Your flowers look just lovely.

  5. Too humid here this summer to work a lot in the garden, even sitting outside was a challenge to find a cooler time. I'm old fashioned and still go with Sept 21 as the first day of Fall, but it has certainly cooled down with the start of the 'ber' months.

  8. So many beautiful pops of color on your front porch and garden area, Deb! They're really pretty. Most of my flowers have fallen their stems so lots of greenery in our garden right now but I'm headed to the garden center later today to see if there are any mums for my front porch. Hope you guys get some relief from the heat soon. The humidity is crazy right now in Florida too. Hugs, CoCo PS: Super excited about your Fall and Halloween decorations again this year!
