I am a Victorian Soul, who lives in a small townhouse that was built in the mid 1970's, not a huge Mega Mansion!! I just recently lost my Hubby Joe, who was a Retired Letter Carrier. I worked night shift as an RN on a Hospital based Rehabilitation( Physical Medicine) Unit for 37 years before I had Knee Replacement Surgery and officially Retired in 2019 after 41 years working in Direct Patient Care ... I am so glad that we retired at 62 years of age and got to spend that time together before he passed....I still do love Retirement!!!!

The Front Porch is Finally Ready for Summer!!

Welcome!!

Finally, I felt the threat of frost has passed here in NEPA so I bought and planted my annuals and now the front porch is ready for the Summer season!!
Last year, I decided to go with an orange, red and yellow theme with the decor and flowers for the front porch......
I decided to keep this theme because it transitions easily into the Autumn season......
Our porch is not really protected from the elements as the overhang that covers the porch is at the level of the second floor.......
As many of you know, I live in a row of 10 townhouses and share a porch with my neighbor on the right ..........
Many years ago, we put in railing separating the porches......
I decided to not spend a lot of money on flowers this year since Joe is now retired and I work part time.

I also learned from lessons in the past, not to over plant pots, what type of flowers work well on our mostly shaded porch and not to spend a lot of money on expensive specialty plants that did not grow well........

In this large urn, I planted 2 reddish colored begonias in the center with 2 yellow and 2 orange marigolds surrounding them........
Last year, I planted a spike that Joe swore was glued in the pot with cement when it came time to pull it out and a red geranium that got crowded out by the marigolds.......

So we will see how this arrangement of flowers does this year......
Planted in the small pot are 2 begonias........
Faux plants were used to fill this lantern, turning it into a vase......
You can see that I carried the red, orange and yellow theme over into the accessories on the front porch.....
The front door........
I spruced up the wreath for the front door.......
I added more flowers and changed the ribbon......
We bought this resin wicker set several years ago in Lowe's.......
You can see that I got my color theme from the cushions on the chairs......
The rugs were bought 3 years ago at Big Lot's......
The set of 3 orange lanterns was bought at Sam's Club a few yeas ago......
And again, I used the one on top of this table as a vase......
In the corner.......
I planted a single Dusty Miller in these small pots from Dollar Tree because last year, the dusty millers grew to the size of shrubs!!
Even my solar light fairy carries on the color theme.......
And a single orange marigold is planted in this pot.......
Looking at the pots in front of the railing from the porch......
In each of these pots, I planted 2 dusty millers, a red begonia in the center and 2 marigolds........
Now the porch is ready for us to enjoy in the afternoons when there is shade on the porch.......
Unfortunately, the front porch gets full sun in the evening but we also get to watch some amazing sunsets from here!!
I bought all the annuals at Lowe's which were just your basic 6 pack of annuals for $2.28.......

I will continue to share the front porch through out the season showing how the flowers are growing and how it looks when decorated for the Patriotic Holidays!!
So I hope you will come back to visit again!!

  3. Love the colors and you didn't mention it but I loved the frogs on the bench that is just the cutest ever :) I do the same thing, by small plants and in no time they grow quite big, makes for decorating with them so much cheaper, than buying already full pots. Looks like a great porch to enjoy the sunsets!

I still have 2 begonias from last year. My sweet potato vine from last year came back.
I was surprised. I like it because it is showy. I want to get some Dusty Miller. Thanks

  9. You have planted some of my favorite annuals, marigolds. I love the bold vibrant colors and couldn't have a summer without them! I completely agree about how big they grow throughout the season so it's better not to crowd the pot and just save that money! I'm planting flowers this week. Our front porch get full afternoon sun also but we enjoy coffee out there on weekend mornings. I look forward to watching your flowers grow throughout the summer.

  11. I am doing the same thing and planting things that will grow well like your marigolds. I did plant plenty of zinnia seeds. The little 6 pak cells of flowers are getting higher in price every year. I like how you have colorful pots as it make things pop.
